Jawan
So I just finished watching Jawan: Extended Cut on Netflix. And there is a lot to cover honestly. This article contains spoilers, so beware.
So I disseminated the whole movie into 3 parts and I'll discuss them separately.
Plot and storyline
Characters
Music
So coming towards the plot and storyline of the movie, the story was typical Atlee plot and there were a lot of similarities between his previous stories and this one. Atlee has something for double roles and it could be seen in his earlier hits - Bigil and Mersal. The story was actually good, looking through the glass of social responsibility a citizen should have. The movie talked about 3 issues India faced in the years free from colonization that did not gain the importance it should have like - farmer suicides, Corporate investment in elections, Bofors Scandal and Gorakhpur Tragedy.
Bofors Scandal was not properly addressed but the essence of it and the main outline of it had been mentioned in the form of Vijay Sethupathi’s character. I think the only three situations that were properly put forward in the movie were the Gorakhpur Tragedy, Paying voters to vote for a particular party and Farmer's Suicides.
Looking from a logical side, the movie made zero sense. I saw a spark coming from leather shoes and i am not very good at physics but i know two things for sure, you can’t jump into a moving vehicle and not fall into either direction (because of the law of gravity of Newton) and the other one, in one scene, Vijay and SRK are in an aircraft and its shown above the clouds, now someone who was shot 5 times and was pushed from this aircraft survives. Where is the physics?
But other than this fact of the movie’s little inconsistencies, the plot was really great and it is written in such a way that it will remain in people’s heads and it will make an impact towards us being responsible citizens.
Coming to the characters and the actors that played them, Vijay Sethupathi was on point. There is no role that guy can't pull, let it be a transgender, a lover boy, an honest police officer or a dead-ass scary guy, Vijay Sethupathi breathes life into whatever he does.
I somewhere felt like Nayanthara was typecasted. I grew up seeing her movies as a child and in her initial days in Malayalam movies, she got these down-to-earth characters who were fierce, but as she came to Tamil movies, she became this very strong character with strong morals. And her character of Narmada reminded me of her characters in Immaku Nodigal and Iru Murugan. But truth be told, she aced this character and there is a reason why she is called the Lady Superstar.
I like SRK, he is a great actor who has given us multiple fits and has filled our childhood with great memories. But somewhere the charm has reduced and there is an unpopular opinion that he is better off as a lover boy. Now, i don't back that statement but his role as Azad and Vikram did not sit well with me.
Even though the original music is in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu sounds way better. Anirudh has that power and talent, honestly speaking, which many composers or singer miss these days. When bollywood is filled with singers like Neha Kakkar and Tony Kakkar who writes and sings songs like "kurta pajyama kala kala", we realise that sweet poetry like lyrics or the background score that just makes us dance is lost. So for bollywood its a new change but for the south indians, its just another track on the shelf, as Anirudh has given us more memorable hits than these songs.
The movie is great, there was a subtle nod to all south indian states like mentioning Onam. But Jailer did more of an inclusion of all south indian film industry. In the beginning, it may be seen as Atlee and Nayantara's debut in Bollywood but in truth it is more like SRK's debut in Kollywood.
